Quick exit for Stefan Zwiers

Montréal, October 26, 2011 – In his first ever appearance at the Pan-American Games, the Canadian judoka Stefan Zwiers was shown the door in expedite fashion Wednesday, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Fighting out of the under 100 kg category, the British Colombian began his day by receiving a bye through the first round.  He would later taken on the Cuban Oreydi Despaigne in the quarterfinals, a bout that eventually turned in the Cuban’s favor.

“I took three penalties, but I still thought I fought well against him. He’s an ex-world champion so I knew it was going to be a real challenge for me,” Zwiers explained.

The Canadian then took on the Colombian Camilo Edilfonso Castano in the L Bracket, where he lost by way of a waza-ari.

“I was really disappointed in the way I competed against the Colombian.  Even though it’s the first time I’ve faced this judoka, I should have won.  In the end it’s all part of the learning process, and I can only hope to do better next time,” Zwiers concluded.

Canadians Catherine Roberge (78 kg), Kelita Zupancic (70 kg), Alexandre Émond (90 kg) and Antoine Valois-Fortier (81 kg) will all be in action Thursday, as the judo competition at the Pan-American Games rolls on.
