5th place finishes for Pessoa and Mehmedovic

Montréal, June 15, 2013 – Sergio Pessoa and Sasha Mehmedovic both placed 5th in their respective categories, Saturday, at the Judo Grand Prix presented in Miami, Florida.

Sergio Pessoa won his first two bouts due to penalties incurred by his opponents, first against the German Senne Wyns followed by the American Nicholas Kossor. His luck would eventually run out versus the Brazilian Eric Takabatake, who would win by ippon.

In the repechage, Pessoa would get the better of the Russian Aram Grigoryan, again winning by taking fewer penalties than his adversary, setting up a bronze medal matchup with the Brazilian Breno Alves. In the end it was Alves who would come out on top, ascending to the third step of the podium.

In the same division, Charles Breton-Leduc won his first bout versus the Brit Graham Trinder before falling to the Swiss Ludovic Chammartin.

Competing in the under 66 kg class, Sasha Mehmedovic beat the Dominican Wander Mateo by ippon and the Romanian Catalin Bratulescu by waza-ari, before falling to the Portuguese Sergiu Oleinic by a yuko. While both competitors were able to score a waza-ari and a yuko, it was Oleinic who would manage a second yuko for the victory.

Mehmedovic would go on to beat the Mongol Khishigyar Buuveibaatar with a waza-ari in the repechage, putting him in line for a shot at a bronze medal.

It was not to be, however. Pitted once again against a Mongol, Batgerel Batsetseg, he would come up short in the fight and have to settle for a 5th place classification.

Nicole Jenicek (- 63 kg) lost her one and only match to the Brazilian Mariana Silva. In the under 73 kg division, Michael Fortin-Demers lost in the first round to the American Robert Lee.

Beauchemin-Pinard places third in Slovenia

Over in Slovenia, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard earned a bronze medal in the under 57 kg class at the Celje European Cup. Stéfanie Tremblay was also in action in the same category, but the results of her bout(s) had not been tallied at the moment this press release was being finalized.

Sunday, Sarah-Myriam Mazouz (-70 kg), Alexandre Émond (-90 kg), Scott McGrandle (-81 kg) and Dilyaver Sheykhislyamov (-100 kg) will all take to the tatamis in Miami, while Amy Cotton (-78 kg) and Alix Renaud-Roy (-70 kg) will be in action in Celje.
