Arthur Margelidon top class
Montréal, July 27, 2013 – (Sportcom) Montrealer Arthur Margelidon took care of business in the under 73 kg class, Saturday, at the Junior European Cup of Judo, presented in Liberec, Czech Republic. In the final, the Canadian judoka made quick work of the South Korean Yeongrae Kim.
“Arthur had a nearly perfect outing today. He was in complete control in the gold medal match. He only a struggled a bit in the semis, where he fell behind and had to come back to win by an ippon,” coach Sergio Pessoa Sr. explained. “Arthur is progressing well of late, and this result bodes well with the World Championships around the corner. You can really tell that he gained a lot of confidence from winning the Canadian Championships!”
In the semifinals, Margelidon defeated the Brazilian Gabriel Mendes.
Also in action, Antoine Bouchard finished 7th in the under 66 kg division.
“I’m still fairly satisfied with my performance, even though I was aiming for a podium finish. Overall, I felt like I put together some good fights,” he pointed out, after posting a record of 4 wins and two losses. My last bout was not the best, as I should have been more aggressive with my kumi-kata.”
On the women’s side, Whitney Lohnes also came away with a 7th place finish, winning two of her four fights in the under 48 kg category.
Among the other Canadians in action, Étienne Briand (-73 kg, 2-1) did not receive a classification. The same was the case with Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (-57 kg) and Philippe Desjardins (-60 kg), who both finished with identical 2-2 records.
As for Alicia Briggs (-52 kg) and Nicolas Dibartolo (-60 kg), both were eliminated in their very first bout.
The judokas will be back in action, Sunday.
