Besson and Mahmoud Sample a Bit of Victory
Montreal, August 8, 2013 (Sportcom) – Marie Besson and Ossama Mahmoud both won their first bouts Thursday, at the U18 World Judo Championships in Miami, Florida, prior to experiencing defeat in their second bouts.
Quebec’s Marie Besson won her first bout via Ippon in the Under 44kg category against Columbia’s Yulieth Diaz. Besson was less successful in battling Brazil’s Thais Kondo; while both scored Yukos, the Canadian received penalties that were her eventual downfall.
“Marie took the lead over the Brazilian athlete, but she wasn’t able to prevent the other judoka from coming back during the bout,” commented Coach Ewan Beaton.
In the Under 50kg category, Ontario’s Ossama Mahmoud beat out the Ukraine’s Oleh Ovcharenko prior to folding himself, after Japan’s Wataru Umekita dolled out an Ippon. “Ossama demonstrated a lot of character out there today, twice rallying back against Ovcharenko; in the bout with Umekita he (Mahmoud) was on the attack, pouring on the pressure,” commented Coach Beaton.
Ontario’s Yassin Youssef in the Under 55 kg class lost his first match against Equador’s Pedro Mieles, where the latter scored an Ippon. “Youssef didn’t have a lot of energy, and his nutrition today was a major factor in today’s results. He wasn’t able to find his pacing,” analyzed Beaton.
Friday’s British Columbia’s Abby Lloyd will take to the tatami in the Under 48kg category, whole Ontario’s Jessica Klimkait and Saskatchewan’s Sydney Poliakiwski will be in action in the Under 52kg class.
In men’s judo, Quebec’s Georges Poklitar and Gabriel Juteau will both compete in the Over 60kg class, while Ontario’s Bradley Langlois will face rivals in the Under 66kg category.
