Monika Burgess places ninth in Ljubljana
Montréal, October 25th, 2013 – The Ontarian judoka Monika Burgess obtained the best Canadian result, Friday, at the Junior World Championships being presented in Ljubljana, Slovenia, after coming away with a 9th place classification in the under 70 kg division.
Burgess began her day with a win by ippon over the Lithuanian Renalda Gedutyte before falling in the second round to one of the tournament favorites, the Croatian Barbara Matic.
Elsewhere, Quebecers Béatrice Valois-Fortier and Louis Krieber-Gagnon both settled for 17th place finishes in their respective categories.
Valois-Fortier started well with a victory in the under 63 kg class over the Italian Chiara Carminucci, before losing her next bout by ippon to the Brit Jemima Duxberry.
As for Krieber-Gagnon, he also began his tourney with a win, beating the Mexican German Ayala in convincing fashion. Up against the top seed in the following round, the Quebecer put up a good fight against the Russian Alan Khubetsov, but would eventually fall by an ippon.
“We had a number of young judokas in action today. Monika still has two years of junior left, Louis is still at cadet age, and Béatrice was competing in her very first tournament at this level. All three of these judokas were mainly here to gain experience more than anything else. The best is yet to come for these youngsters,” coach Nicolas Gill commented.
Also in action on Friday, Ontarian Zachary Burt (81 kg) was eliminated in the first round by the Slovak Filip Stancel, who won by a yuko.
Exempted from the opening round, the British Columbian Brandon Jobb (90 kg) lost his first bout against the Japanese judoka Yusuke Kobayashi.
The Quebecoise Alix Renaud-Roy (70 kg) also bowed out in her first contest, falling to the Belgian Lola Mansour by an ippon.
Saturday, the Quebecers Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi (78 kg), Sophie Vaillancourt (+ 78kg) and Kyle Reyes (100 kg) along with the Ontarian Martin Rygielski (+ 100 kg) will be the ones to watch in Ljubljana.
