Montreal, August 28, 2016 – Team Canada’s judo squad will come home with two bronze medals from the European Judo Cup, which has just come to a close in Sarrebruck, Germany. Alix Renaud-Roy (Under 70 kg) and Étienne Briand (Under 81 kg) both were able to attain the third step of the podium in their respective categories this Sunday.

In qualifying rounds, Renaud-Roy first earned a pass, then won her next two bouts by ippon – one against Germany’s Meike Wegner, and another against Britain’s Katiejemima Yeatsbrown. Renaud-Roy, from La Pocatière, then went on to face defeat at the hands – and ippon – of France’s Clémentine Louchez.

In her bronze medal match facing Germany’s Lea Pueschel, it only took 49 seconds for the Quebecois judoka to put an end to her competitor’s day, once again with an Ippon.

“During my last match I knew the ‘plan’ and what I had to do. It ended up even better than I could have imagined!” commented the 23 year-old Canadian.

“It definitely boosts morale, and it was a nice problem-free ippon juji in the bronze medal round. It’s her first medal since her injury so she’s back on track,” added Team Canada Head Coach Jean-Pierre Cantin.

Étienne Briand had a busy day himself. In the preliminary round, the judoka from Sept-Îles won a bout against The Netherlands’ Arno Savelkoul with an ippon, and then won against Sweden’s Olle Mattsson with a waza-ari. However Brand’s rapid rise came to a halt against The Netherlands’ Thomas Snijders.

In the repechage, Briand once again found his winning ways, bettering Germany’s Sascha Schmitz, The Netherlands’ Graatje Weber, and Germany’s Timo Cavelius. In his last match, the Canadian got the better of Dutch athlete Jesper Smink with a yuko, in under five minutes.

“Of course everyone wants to win medals, but you have to be ready to meet your adversary and bring your game face. Briand won six bouts – that’s a big day! – but you have to do it, and you must be prepared to manage your day in order to be ready for the next match.” Offered Coach Cantin.

Top-10 For Coulombe and Deschênes

Baie-Comeau’s Mina Coulombe (Under 78 kg) reached fifth place: she started her day with a pass, then lost her first match by an ippon doled out by The Netherlands’ Larissa Groenwold. In the repechage Coulombe was defeated by an ippon from Luxembourg’s Monique Kedinger, after that another ippon got the better of the Canadian, this time at the hands of France’s Christelle Garry in her last match.

Laval’s Marc Deschênes finished in 7th place in the Under 100 kg. Deschênes lost his first match against The Netherlands’ Sjors Riddersma, after having earned two passes. In the repechage, the Canadian won against Germany’s Erik Becker via ippon, but the former finished his day with an ippon defeat from Switzerland’s Patrick Moser.

Trois Rivieres’ Olivier Gobeil St-Amand (Under 81 kg) and Montreal’s Louis Krieber-Gagnon (Under 90 kg) did not achieve a ranking.
