Canadian judokas gain experience
Montreal, June 21, 2009 – Five young Canadian judokas competed this weekend at the Dax Cup in Celje, Slovenia. While their results were not spectacular, the competition proved to be a valuable experience.
On Sunday, Ève Renaud-Roy of St-Roch-des-Aulnaies, Que., and Justin Imagawa of Vancouver lost their opening bouts in 52 kilos and 81 kilos respectively and were eliminated.
It was the same outcome on Saturday for Maude-Hélène Benoit of Ste-Foy, Que., in 63 kilos, Charles Breton-Leduc of Trois-Rivières, Que., in 60 kilos and Scoot McGrandle of Vancouver in 73 kilos.
‘’For most of them it was the highest level senior tournament they have competed in,’’ said Canadian national team coach Nicholas Gill. ‘’Three of the five are still junior-aged. They came here to learn.
‘’There were no subpar performances. Everyone worked well. It was a big challenge.’’
Canadian judokas are scheduled to compete at the Grand Slam tournament in Rio de Janeiro July 4-5.
