Montréal, August 26th, 2011 – It was another arduous day for the Canadian judokas in action on Friday, in what was day 4 of competition at the Judo World Championships, taking place in Paris, France.

In the under 78 kg class, Amy Cotton and Catherine Roberge crossed paths early on with the number one and two top ranked judokas in the world.  The Charlesbourg native was eliminated in the first round, as she had the unfortunate task of facing the American, Kayla Harrison.  As for the Montrealer, she won her first bout against Keivl Pinto (Venezuela) before succumbing to the Japanese, Akari Ogata.  The Frenchwoman, Audrey Tcheumeo, would eventually win the gold.

“I’m disappointed because I had some really good results in South America, but I fought well today, despite the loss to the world’s number one in the second round.  I tried a lot of different things against her, and ended up falling two or three times in the fight,” Cotton explained.

In the under 70 kg category, the Ontarian, Kelita Zupancic, lost in the first round to the Brazilian, Maria Portela.  Another Frenchwoman, Lucie Decosse, would go on to win the gold.

On the men’s side, in the under 90 kg division, Alexandre Émond started his day off with a victory over the Chinese, Jizhao Zheng, before falling to Elkhan Mammadov (Azerbaijan).  It was the Greek, Ilias Iliadis, who would eventually go on to become the new world champion.
