Montreal, September 25, 2019 – Evelyn Beaton was the first Canadian athlete in action at the Cadet World Championships held in Almaty, in Kazakhstan. Even though she was eliminated in the first round in the -44 kg category, “there’s a lot to learn from today,” commented her father and Canadian team coach Ewan Beaton.

French Aya Louchene put an end to the Albertan’s day when she scored an ippon 1 minute and 50 seconds into the bout. “It was a difficult day. The French was a very strong competitor, and Evelyn wasn’t feeling her best today (Wednesday). She started okay, but she couldn’t adjust to her opponent’s strategy,” added Ewan Beaton.

At the end of the competition, Evelyn saw Venezuelan Maria Gimenez and Brazilian Laura Soken standing on the podium, in second and third places respectively. According to her father, it was a very emotional moment for the young Canadian.

“She was very disappointed, especially when she saw Gimenez and Soken on the podium. She defeated them both in the last six months, so it was difficult for her.”

Despite the disappointment of Wednesday, Ewan Beaton is confident and positive for Evelyn who, at 14, was competing in the tournament with the best athletes under 18.

“It was a hard day, with difficult lessons. In the end, it allowed her to gain more experience at the international level. She has to learn to manage her expectations and her emotions better. Now, she should use her experience to keep getting better and be better prepared for her next competitions.”

The tournament will continue on Thursday in Almaty, with five Canadians in action on the mats. Emilija Ema Tesanovic and Tami Goto will be fighting in -48 kg for the girls’ team, as well as Daniel McCristall (-60 kg), Braden Dixon (-60 kg), and Finn Schroeder (-66 kg) on the boys’ team.
