Montréal, September 11, 2011 – Quebecois judokas Kalem Kachur and Marylise Lévesque both grabbed 5th place spots in their respective categories, Sunday, at the World Cup competition taking place in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.

Fighting out of the under 81kg class, Kalem Kachur started the competition strongly, winning his first two bouts by way of ippon.  After making quick work of the Chinese Nim Cho Joe Li, he then disposed of the Mongol judoka, Tuvshinjargal Gan.

In the semi-finals, the 30-year-old athlete put up a good fight against the Korean Suk Woong Hong, but would eventually come up short, losing by way of waza-ari.  Suk Woong proved to be the class of the competition, as he would go on to win gold. Kachur, meanwhile, would end up settling for a 5th place finish, after losing to the Russian Yvan Vorobev in the bronze medal bout by ippon.

On the Women’s side, Marylise Lévesque was on display in the under 78kg class.  After benefitting from a bye into the second round, she would lose her first bout by ippon versus the Ukrainian Victoria Turks.  Lévesque refocused for her next match in the L bracket, winning by ippon over the Mongol Nyamtuya Nyamkhuu.  Her next bout would unfortunately be her last, as she fell to the Pole, Daria Pogorzelec.

Kalem Kachur and Marylise Lévesque will now make their way to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where they will take part in another World Cup competition, next week.
