Montréal, November 15, 2014 – The Canadian team added 3 medals to its already impressive collection on Saturday, at the Judo Oceanic Open in Wollongong, Australia.

Alix Renaud-Roy won the gold medal in the under 70 kg category. After facing the Czech Alena Eiglova and the Australian Catherine Arscott, the Quebecoise won against the New Zealander Moira de Villers in the final.

“I’m very happy with today and especially the final. I had already seen the girls I was fighting against today so I knew their style” said Renaud-Roy.

On the men’s side, Zachary Burt won the silver medal in the under 81 kg. The Ontarian, who now lives in Quebec, got in the final after winning against the Korean Gihyeok Nam and the Australian Eoin Coughlan. During the last round, Burt lost against the Korean Seungsu Lee.

In the under 90 kg, Jonah Burt won the bronze medal. Burt won against Kila Arusa, from Papua New Guinea, then against the Australians Sebastian Temesi and Karl Zuvela. The American Thomas Capra was the only one to win against him during this tournament.

“This was another very successful day for the Canadian Judoka. Once again, all of the players stepped on the podium. As the coach, I am very pleased with the performance of all the athlete’s this weekend” said Sasha Mehmedovic.

The Canadian team won no less than 13 medals during the weekend in Wollongong: 2 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze.
